Hi, I was challenged today by the port on my livebox to install a printer to it. It seems it’s not as straight forward as one would hope. Here’s the steps
- Turn your livebox on and plug in your printer to the USB port on one of the sides. (Hint: it’s underneath the “1″ and “2″ buttons
- Go to your networked computer (i.e. any computer you use to surf the internet through the livebox)
- In your preferred web browser, go to “http://configuration.adsl” or “http://192.168.1.1″ depending on your configuration (try them both if one doesn’t work!)
- Log in to the pages
- On the homepage, you should see a table with “My Services” over it
- Click “Change” next to the liveprinter
- Enable it if it hasn’t already been enabled
- Now go to Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes
- Click “add a printer”
- Click “Next” then Choose “A local computer” and untick “Automatically Detect P&P Devices”, Click Next
- Choose “Create a new port”, and choose “Standard TCP/IP Port” from the drop down list
- Click Next. In printer name, type “192.168.1.1″ and let the computer fill in the field below. Click next.
- In the next window choose “Generic Network Adapter” from the dropdown list
- After that, select your printer driver, and click next
- Fill in the details it wants, click next
- Fill in the rest of the details, click Next
- Click finish and you are done

The Vista screen after step 13 needs you to select TCP/IP device from the pull down menu and then gives option to query the printer and auto select the driver (but if the printer isn’t recognised it does the right thing and drops you into the manual model-select screen).
It is not obvious that you need to regard the printer as ‘local’ on every machine instead of ‘networked’ though it may be too much to expect the livebox to have s/w to handle print spooling/queues - unless this is to be in a future upgrade (then making it simpler for Orange to support it as a ‘network printer’)
Hope that helped some people ![]()

Great help thanks!
Only had one issue that my printer driver wasn’t listed and I wasn’t able to find it on the CD that came with it. So I installed the printer using USB direct to the PC, then in properties, ports, changed this to the new port I created as per your instructions.
Now works perfectly!

Have tried both a lexmark 730 and 2300 and neither will work on livebox . Followed your set up intructions - and seem to follow this ok until when you get to printing document the laptop sends out ‘printing status ‘ display window (as normal)) but then this window disappears almost immediately. The window flashes up 0% and then goes !! Document does not get printed. Any ideas?

Works fine - thank you (two XP PCs + Vista wireless laptop).
The Vista screen after step 13 needs you to select TCP/IP device from the pull down menu and then gives option to query the printer and auto select the driver (but if the printer isn’t recognised it does the right thing and drops you into the manual model-select screen).
It is not obvious that you need to regard the printer as ‘local’ on every machine instead of ‘networked’ though it may be too much to expect the livebox to have s/w to handle print spooling/queues - unless this is to be in a future upgrade (then making it simpler for Orange to support it as a ‘network printer’) As their web site says this is a “new service coming to Orange soon”, hence not-supported, so we can’t expect them to be trained up to help on this yet!

@Graham - Sorry mate I’ve got no idea.
@Melvin - Thanks for the useful addition to the post, (I’ll add it to the main post so people can see it) and yes, Orange aren’t doing very much to help at the moment.
@Everyone else - Thanks for your comments!

Tom great site, thanks.
Have set up my HP PSC 1350 as liveprinter using Mark’s change of properties advice. However not all features seem to operate such as scan and memory card access. Do you have a fix or advice for the use of all printer features.

Thanks very much indeed for the Livebox printer installation instructions. I can confirm that the Samsung CLP-300 printer is compatible. You may need to use the CD to install the driver (from D:\Printer\GDI\WIN2KXP in the case of Windows XP).

20 IvanAdventure // Mar 30, 2008 at 12:23 am
Setting up an Epson on the Livebox from OSX 10.4.11
Sys Prefs > Print & Fax > Printing > +
should open Printer Setup Utility then select IP Printer and set the following
Protocol: HP Jet Direct - Socket
Address: 192.168.1.1 (the IP address of the Livebox)
the utility should find the printer and select a driver (mine selected the Generic Postscript Printer driver that did not work, so if necessary select from the drop down list)
name it and add a location, if you want, and finish by clicking Add.
I cannot see why this will not work for any printers that you have drivers for that can cope with any of the three protocols listed - I suspect nearly all modernish printers will be able to use the HP protocol.
Hope that makes life simple.Smile. No guarantees, but it worked for me.

Heya, I thought I would leave a comment because your guide was very useful
It now works for my Lexmark Z22 which is at least 5-6 years old! It initially didn’t work because I had tried installing it wirelessly, however I got it to work properly by during the installing process I was connected to the Livebox via ethernet cable. Hope this helps for anyone else having troubles.
Again, thank you for the guide

Fantastic. I emailed Orange and they said it is not supported. Your instructions were so easy. All i had to do, as i read from one of the other comments was to supply the ‘Have disk’ option when going through the installation wizard.
Perhaps someone ought to send your info to Orange bods!!!!
Many thanks

Worked first time with my old EPSON STYLUS PHOTO 870 which is 8 years old. I have a new Canon ip4500 arriving any day now so I’ll try that too.
I’ve read that powered hubs work so I’m wondering if I’ll be able to choose either printer without any unplugging, i.e. if both are switched on and plugged into a hub connected to the Livebox, can either be selected to print? Or is there going to be some problem such as a driver conflict (assuming the Canon works with Liveprinter in the first place!).
45 Randyzippy // Jun 21, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Has anyone had any success with the dell 810 all in one, i know it says earlier there’re not compatible but someone said they got the photo one to work
46 AC // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Following up on my post #44 above:
1) The Canon ip4500 works perfectly via LivePrinter as well.
2) Either printer will work equally well via my no-name powered USB hub, even though I didn’t power the hub.
3) As I’d suspected, it isn’t possible to have more than one printer working via the hub. Firstly Windows will not accept the same port IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.1) for more than one printer. I was able to re-name the port name by adding a digit (either inside brackets or not) but couldn’t associate a different driver to it without replacing that for the other printer.
So, as expected, it’s one port, one printer and therefore only one printer can be connected to the Livebox. Not a disaster but unfortunate.
On thr plus side, the Canon’s quality blows the Epson out of the water and cost less than a quarter the Epson cost me all those years ago

Just wanted to add that I have managed to set up HP C4380 Wireless All In One printer remote from livebox but using livebox as link between my laptop and the printer. All worked perfectly OK by following instructions within Printer Installation CD using USB cable connection first. Problems encountered when I attempted to connect printer to Livebox as kept saying it couldn’t find it. After 2 hours searching on Web a different forum reminded me of ‘pairing’ button (no. 1). Pressing this just before installation attempted to connect solved problem perfectly. Now working perfectly for printing but scanning doesn’t work from laptop. Not too much of a problem as can use another PC for this. For printing it is perfect as only need to turn printer and laptop can be used anywhere in house or garden.
Hope this makes sense as 11.30 at night and bit tired ;=]

After a long struggle with the DX6050 I’ve managed to get my Dad’s laptop connected; the only downside - It doesn’t stop printing.
Right now I’m not too concerned that the printouts come out all white-lined in the middle of text, but yesterday while at work I received a text saying “Printer won’t stop” - Got home and found out that apparently the request to print a spreadsheet, four pages in length, results in the printer using up all the available paper.
Now I know for a fact this never happened before when the printer was installed on my own machine - now we’ve gone wireless with it it seems to have gone loco in the coco.
Anyone got any ideas, because I’m getting a bit sick of thinking really - I’m not sure if it’s maybe the drivers or just a setting I’ve missed somewhere, but it’s abnormal behaviour at any rate and making my head thump! (Which isn’t too nice, cause I’m hungover!!)

Thanks Tom. This worked brilliantly with my old HP Laserjet 1010, but I have just replaced it with the HP Laserjet P1006 (I’m using Vista home premium).
Could NOT get the P1006 to print until I found an easy solution on another forum:
Install printer using Tom’s instructions, THEN right-click on printer, select properties and under the ‘Ports’ tab UNCHECK the ‘enable bidirectional support’ option which was on by default. Now everything works perfectly again.
I wonder if this might also solve issues with other types of printer?

Have a HP 3310 AIO wireless printer which worked perfectly for my PC with Windows XP OS and for my wife’s laptop. I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista Home PremiumOS. My PC connected fine to the internet but I can’t get my AIO connected to Livebox network. In setting up the AIO identifies the SSID as Livebox-9990, the Livebox name. When asked for WAP PASSPHRASE I entered the security code on the base of the Livebox. Obviously there was no connectivity. I contacted Orange for help, giving them the same info I have given you but they declined to help as they did not ‘give technical support to third party equipment’. Can you get my printer online? PLEASE HELP!! Gerard Totten
80 Tom Hallam // Oct 23, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Gerard, I’m sorry but I’d have to stay on the side of Orange. This is not a Livebox issue, it’s a HP issue, and I don’t have any experience in using or configuring HP Printers for use with a wireless router such as a Livebox.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help,

People who are having problems with the wireless part have not read Jase’s post on the 11th July above. You need to pair any wireless device with the livebox to get it recognised (press button 1 on the livebox). I did this and the printer now works without needing a usb connection with any other PC/ Laptop or the livebox. Thanks again for starting an excellent forum.

Many thanks, this worked a treat on my Epsom Stylus Photo 830 Previous to Livebox had fully functioning wireless connections to 2 computers and wireless printer via Belkin print server.
I spent over a day fiddling around to get the livebox set up (installation disc did not work) so had to set up manually. Then printer would only work with an ethernet cable! I am one happy bunny now!!!

Hi Tom,
I attempted to add an Epson DX4850 which is an all in one. I see from reading the comments ’s that you advise that all in ones are not compatible with livebox. The problem is the same as Rustvaars - ie print does not stop. But I notice that Graeme was successful with a DX7400 which is also an all in one. Is there a trick that I am missing with the DX4850? Many thanks for your effort in putting up this page.

Clare - you can buy an RJ45 to USB transformer plug for £6.99 from here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LUPO-ETHERNET-NETWORK-RJ45-ADAPTER/dp/B000S6DFZ8/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226679888&sr=1-46

I’ve managed to get it to work on our PC with a Canon ip3000 and I followed the mac instructions and it works on our macbook as well - I wouldn’t have known where to start without this article, thank you very much!

Thanks for the info about hooking up printers to the live box. I have today set my study DEll wired to wor through the live box and now my laptop Dell wirelessley. My next question is , what happens if you put a USB hup on the single USB out of the live box. Can you then put another printer on it or does the hub confuse things. At the moment I cant get anything to work if the hub is in circuit.
Thanks
Nick

I have answered my question about the usb hub. I had to refesh the lan connection and it then worked. So I then went ahead and installed my colour printer, an elederly Epson Color 680, by the way the laser is a Samsung ML 1520. The problem I now have is that the printers are not controlled correctly. Either will work if the other is not plugged in to the hub, but which ever works at any one time, over rides the choice of printer
